Food Technology

Food Technology is a valuable subject for all pupils, but more so for SEN pupils. Through a subject like Food Technology, pupils will develop confidence, independence, problem-solving skills and self-esteem. They will also learn the value of home-cooked food and how this can help towards physical and mental health.

Food Technology is a practical based subject which pupils fully engage with and often choose to pursue as a future career within the catering industry.

Here at Muntham House School, we offer the Pearson BTEC Level 1 and Level 2 Awards in Home Cooking Skills; therefore, the pupils get to take away a professional qualification in this subject. Food Technology will also provide pupils with a good basic level of cooking skills which they can use in later life.

Intent

The intent of the Btec Home Cooking Skills Course, which is offered to pupils in Years 10 and 11, is to enable them to be able to cook healthy food for themselves, family and friends. We want them to be able to do this in a safe, hygienic way, whilst finding recipes to suit different situations in their lives. In KS3, pupils start a Foundation for Food Technology learning new skills and developing their subject knowledge.

Implement

The pupils will learn different techniques and skills to be able to produce a variety of well-finished dishes. They do this by repetition through the spiral curriculum, as they readdress skills in different recipes. Whilst cooking different dishes, discussion is generated regarding the nutritional aspects of the dish, and this is reinforced by the completion of worksheets at the end of each lesson.

Impact

On completing the Btec Home Cooking Skills Level 1, the pupils will have gained an enjoyment of cooking, and the confidence to create a nutritious meal for themselves and their families. This is a crucial life skill that will sustain them throughout their lives, helping them to eat healthily as well as to balance their budget.

This Department Aims To

  • Capture the imagination of our pupils to try different foods.
  • Collect a personal array of favourite recipes that the boys enjoy cooking for family and friends.
  • Create dishes using skills repetitively to develop the sensory qualities of the dish.
  • Connect with the nutritious elements of each ingredient to find healthy recipes.
  • Carve a life skill that will sustain them throughout many of life’s diverse times.
